The X-Files: Area 51 Showdown
This is my Raiders of the Lost Ark, although with aliens and Agent Mulder trying to take them down. This was a Flash game that I created for my Flash Gaming class. The original idea was to have the game be an advertisment for a product, which in this case was the X-Files DVD box sets. Simple enough.
The problem with the game was to create a game in the theme and spirit of the X-Files. But after some quick thinking I came up with a shooting game that basically plays out with Agent Fox Mulder shooting at some flying saucers. Each saucer was worth a certain amount of points based on their color, some of which would earn you points, and a few that would cost you. The screenshot shown here is the main screen, which I created in Photoshop after using a screen capture of the opening credits. As for the game itself, the story was that Mulder is sent on assignment to Area 51 to investigate some UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects).
The game itself is divided into three stages, the first two stages involve Mulder running back and forth while shooting at the ships. The second stage includes ships that reduce points rather than add poiints. The third stage changes the game play, where rather than running back and forth, Mulder is frozen in place and the user aims Mulder's gun using the mouse rather than the keyboard. But the main point of the game was to sell the DVDs.
Here is the transcript of the mission briefing, which mentions the DVDs:
Hello Agent Mulder,
From the looks of things you are here to buy some of our classified X-Files Season DVDs. However, there are ways to get them cheaper or even free, legally of course. But not without some hard field work on your part.
However, there is something I need you to look into. Apparently, there is some suspicious activity involving unidentified ships in an abandoned airfield. I would like you to investigate. All we have are the colors of the ship, but we have given you what these ships may look like.
The level of hostility will be based on a point system, If you score 100 or more points you will be given a 50% off coupon for one of the DVDs.

Not exactly the most exciting storyline ever for a game advertising a product, but then again, not most are. So bear with me on that one. The game was actually a humorous success despite the lack of convincing storyline. So press the screen cap below to play the game!
